The Ivanovo is located north east of Moscow. Ivanovo Oblast is bordered by Kostroma Oblast to the north, Nizhny Novgorod Oblast to the east, Vladimir Oblast to the south, and Yaroslavl Oblast to the west. The Volga river flows through the northern part of the region.
