We are trailing a new method of including audio in the site. It will look the same but technically it is quite different. Please help us test!

The Background

Our regular users will know that people are constantly having difficulty with playing audio on this site. While this works for many users fine, other users find it difficult. There are so many combinations of operating systems, browsers and audio plug ins.

The problem is that the long running HTML4 specification had no support for audio. As a result plug-ins were required. It was hard to find a solution that worked on all browsers. At the time we did a lot of research and decided to support the three main browsers. IE, Firefox and Opera.

HTML5 introduces a standard way to include audio within HTML pages. Much like we do now. This should work with all new web browsers without plug-ins and will make it much easier for everyone to get audio working. All the main browsers (IE, Firefox, Opera, Chrome & Safari) now have support for HTML5. So we are looking to upgrade the site. This will mean that all users will need to update their web browsers if they are not using a current one.

The biggest problem is that HTML5 is so new. In fact the standard is not finalised. So we would like to get our users to test the site first.

The second problem is that each browser supports different file formats, although all of the above five support either MP3 (IE, Safari) or Ogg (FF, Ch, Op) format. The HTML5 specification does allow you to specify more than one format, so this is not really a problem, it just means we need to create Ogg versions of our content.

The Test Site

Our test page can be found at: http://www.russianlessons.net/audio/audio-test.php

Please try the audio, in particular, the second test. Please test with your favourite browser and report your results to this thread. Comments are also welcome.

You will probably need to make sure your browser is up to date. In particular, IE users need at least IE9, which you may need to download as its not necessary included in windows update. (You can check your version by finding the help->about option in the browsers menu)

Thanks for your feedback. The more feedback we can get, the more time we can spend working on the site. Smile

Tests on an out of date Linux system...

Linux: Ubuntu 10.04
Firefox 3.6.13 : OK. But cutting off end on first play (likely connection too slow)
Konqueror 4.4.5 : Not working

Alt Linux 6.0
FF 6.0.2 - This works fine.
Konqueror 4.6.5 - Short audio file plays with interrupt at the middle. It sounds like she swallows the words. Long file sounds normally. Audioplayers are available with black rectangles above them. The scroll bar doesn't move by mouse.
IE - I don't need it Twisted Evil
